To the one whose teacher said trees can’t be purple

Why not? They look good purple.
Maybe magenta, too.

Taking away the purple crayon
was just mean.

I’m sorry she did that to you.
Here’s your purple crayon.

And while we’re at it, let’s get out
the periwinkle one, too.

Ooo, and the boysenberry, the mulberry,
the orchid, the amethyst, the plum,

and yes, the grape.
Do not forget the grape.

Use ’em all, my friend. Sure,
throw in some birds and clouds

and hills that reek faintly of
newsprint. Don’t forget the swirly

sun. I love your swirly suns
raining all that bright down

on us mere mortals, making
every bit of life grow,

especially those fabulous
purple trees.

Ah, just so! Someone’s teacher had never seen jacaranda trees in full bloom! They were brought to us from their native regions in central South America and festoon the streets of many cities in coastal southern California, throughout Florida, and perhaps most famously, on Maui. Though it proliferates here, it is threatened in those native ranges due to habitat loss from agriculture and logging, so keep on letting the child in you remind us of that beautiful purple, even if we have to sneak the crayon to you!

P.S.: And don’t forget the purple-leaved plum, the copper beech, the forest-pansy redbud, the royal purple smoke tree, and the crimson king maple, whose leaves are purple all season long! Teacher was sooo misinformed.

I love your list of purple trees, Terry. I’m keeping that! Jacarandas, of course… they are invasive all over Hawaii, but soooo pretty. And your P.S. list is sending me to the internet to look up each one of those. Thank you!
